Why Unclutter exists
To help the user use their computer without having to understand the complexity of software.
The everyday user sees a task. The everyday user sees a computer that can help them with the task.
The everyday user doesn't care what operating system they're using. They don't care about the version of glibc and they don't care about their desktop environment. They don't want to update. They don't want to be aware of every step of their machine.
They don't want the clutter.
Core principles
- Resilient: No surprise breakages
- Offering: Provide tools that the user needs
- Quiet: Stay out of user's way as much as possible
- Unity: Single set of settings empowering all everyday users
- Flexibility: Install additional software via Flathub
- Consistency: Minimal changes in user experience
- Security: Keeping up with latest security updates
- Reliability: System modifications end up in a well-known configuration
Updates
Unclutter updates as a monolith. The whole operating system along with its packages update as one piece. The update takes the user from a known working configuration to another known working configuration with no surprises.
There is only one way to update: Update to the latest version.
